Raunds Town Council Launches “Leprechaun Monitoring Programme” After Multiple Sightings Across Town

Residents across Raunds were left confused but cautiously intrigued yesterday after the town council confirmed it had begun monitoring what it described as a “series of unusual St Patrick’s Day related sightings.”

Reports first began circulating shortly after lunchtime when several residents claimed to have spotted a small green-clad figure moving quickly between various locations around the town. Witnesses described the individual as “suspiciously cheerful” and “far too energetic for a Monday afternoon.”

The first sighting was reported outside The World Turned Over, before similar reports followed near The Pecking Wood, The Duke & Dragon, and later outside The Scarlet Lion, where one resident claimed the figure disappeared behind a parked car before reappearing moments later further down the street.

One witness also claimed to have heard what sounded like “tiny voices arguing about puppet territory,” although investigators have not yet confirmed whether this was related to the sightings.

“I’m not saying it was a leprechaun,” said one local resident, “but I’ve lived here a long time and I’ve never seen someone move that quickly between four pubs without at least stopping for a bag of crisps.”

While the council has stopped short of confirming the presence of leprechauns within Raunds town boundaries, officials say the number of sightings was enough to warrant what they described as “light monitoring.”

Councillor Leo Wilkins, speaking on behalf of the council’s newly formed Seasonal Phenomena Monitoring Committee, confirmed the situation was being reviewed.

“We’re not confirming the presence of leprechauns at this stage,” he explained.

“However, when multiple residents independently report seeing a small man in green disappearing between licensed premises, it would be irresponsible for the council not to at least keep an eye on the situation.”

Fellow councillor Helena Howellson reassured residents that there was currently no cause for alarm.

“At this stage we’re simply asking people to remain observant,” she said. “If anyone does encounter a small bearded individual guarding a pot of gold, we would encourage them to report the sighting in a calm and responsible manner.”

The most recent sighting reportedly occurred near The Baron of Wellingford, where a resident claimed the mysterious figure was seen disappearing behind a wheelie bin shortly before sunset.

The investigation took an unexpected turn overnight after reports of disturbances outside The Laughing Fool Café, where several outdoor chairs were allegedly moved, rearranged and in at least one case removed entirely.

While authorities have not confirmed a connection, some residents suggested the activity may be consistent with what folklore experts describe as “classic leprechaun mischief,” which historically includes small acts of chaos, unexplained furniture movement and a general disregard for outdoor seating arrangements.

However, the incident has also reignited speculation about the town’s Raunds Puppet Club, which some residents believe may still be operating a secret hotline used to report unusual activity.

One local resident claimed the leprechaun sightings may in fact be part of an ongoing “territorial dispute” between the town’s puppet community and what they described as “external folklore entities.”

Council officials declined to comment directly on the suggestion, although a spokesperson confirmed that the council had “not ruled out the possibility that multiple unexplained phenomena may currently be active within the Raunds area.”

Residents have been advised not to approach any suspected leprechauns directly and to instead observe from a safe distance, preferably from inside a nearby pub.

At the time of publication no pots of gold had been recovered, although several residents reported a noticeable increase in “suspiciously enthusiastic” pub activity across the town.

Council officials confirmed they would also be reviewing whether the town’s Puppet Club Hotline had received any leprechaun-related reports, although early indications suggest the puppets are “refusing to comment.”
